Tent and RV rendezvous

Destination: Gunnison County, Colorado

Number of family members: 40-plus

Trip organizer: Patti Acheson, age 72

Growing up on a farm in Louisiana, my nine siblings and I developed a deep love for the outdoors. As we got older, we wanted our children to stay connected to that heritage. That’s how our annual family gatherings began. My sister Debbie and I handle the planning, using our family’s Facebook group to gather input. Once we settle on a campground, Deb and I create a meal plan for each day. We post it, and everyone signs up for food, meal prep, and cleanup duties.

The best part of these trips is gathering around the campfire at night. We sing, share stories, and strengthen bonds with relatives we might not otherwise have gotten to know. The laughter and connection make these trips truly special.

Camping tips

Keep costs in mind. Plans for custom T-shirts were scrapped when one family realized they’d need to buy eight. “We focus on activities that don’t require a big budget,” Acheson says.

Reserve a group campsite. It’s an affordable option and helps avoid disturbing other campers. Booking a covered pavilion ensures a central space for cooking and gathering.
